How Entourage Yearbooks Turned Peak Season Pressure Into a Performance Advantage With CONNECT
Company Overview
Entourage Yearbooks is one of the fastest-growing yearbook companies in the United States and a recognized leader in what the industry calls “Next Generation” yearbooks — hybrid physical-and-digital products that blend traditional printed books with QR-linked video, digital signing, and online viewing experiences. Serving thousands of schools and organizations nationwide — from preschools and elementary schools through high schools, colleges, and universities — Entourage has carved out a distinctive niche by combining intuitive online design software, fast turnaround times, and competitive pricing.
“CONNECT allows us to know what is going well and also what is not going as expected so we can take action before the problem escalates. We are delighted with our investment in CONNECT. During our yearbook season, we’ve already seen a good return on our investment.”
— Elias Jo, CEO and Co-Founder, Entourage Yearbooks
The company’s Princeton Junction, New Jersey production site is built for high-quality yearbook manufacturing at scale, running HP Indigo Web and Canon varioPRINT iX-series sheetfed presses alongside a comprehensive complement of analog finishing equipment for binding, stitching, and casing-in. That hybrid environment lets Entourage produce and ship fully finished, high-quality yearbooks under their own roof — a meaningful competitive advantage in an industry where peak-season timing is everything.
The Challenge
Yearbook production is one of the most schedule-sensitive segments in print. When peak season hits, every press hour, every finishing line, and every operator shift counts — and the consequences of falling behind ripple straight through to graduation ceremonies, school assemblies, and end-of-year deliveries that simply cannot move.
For Entourage, three operational realities made real-time visibility a strategic priority:
- Capacity decisions had to be made in real time. During peak season, Entourage runs at full in-house capacity and outsources the overflow. Knowing precisely what could be produced internally — and when — was essential to making smart outsourcing calls and protecting margins.
- Equipment and labor utilization needed to be maximized. With a sophisticated mix of digital presses and analog finishing equipment, getting the most out of every machine and every shift required visibility that legacy manual tracking simply couldn’t provide.
- Service Level Agreements left no margin for surprises. Time-sensitive deliverables meant management needed to know — daily — whether targets were on track, where issues were emerging, and how to respond before small problems became schedule-breaking ones.
The team needed standardized, automated, real-time data across a multi-vendor, multi-technology floor. And they needed it in time for the 2023 yearbook season.
The Solution
Entourage evaluated three production analytics platforms before selecting CONNECT. According to CEO Elias Jo, three factors drove the decision:
- Best-in-class digital press integration, including deep insight into HP Indigo and Canon press performance.
- True analog tracking through AUTOMATER™, which uses sensors to capture data from analog finishing equipment — a capability the competing platforms didn’t offer.
- Out-of-the-box deployability, with no multi-week configuration project standing between Entourage and live production data.
CONNECT’s vendor-neutral, multi-technology platform gave Entourage a single, standardized way to capture and analyze metrics across their entire production floor — digital and analog, press and finishing — with automated data collection replacing manual tracking and tribal knowledge.
Implementation
SpencerMetrics engaged with Entourage before the 2023 yearbook season started — exactly the right window for a data foundation to be in place when peak demand arrived. The combination of CONNECT’s multi-vendor digital device support and the AUTOMATER module for analog data collection enabled the system to be installed quickly and reliably, well in advance of peak production.
Elias Jo described the experience this way: “It really felt like an appliance installation. They came in, put a box in our facility, plugged it in, and then, bang — the dashboard started appearing. We were up and going in less than a week.”
For an operation preparing for its busiest season of the year, that speed wasn’t just convenient — it was decisive.
Results and Benefits
Real-Time Production Visibility
For the first time, Entourage’s operators, supervisors, and leadership could see exactly what was happening on every press and finishing line, on every shift, in real time. Long-held assumptions — like the gap between day-shift and night-shift output — moved from anecdote to quantified fact.
A Productivity Lift From Visibility Alone
One of the earliest and most striking results came from an unexpected source: peer awareness. Once night-shift operators could see how their output compared to the day shift, productivity on the night shift began to climb on its own. As Elias Jo put it: “Night shift sees they’re slower than day shift too — so then night shift starts speeding up. That has increased productivity.” The data didn’t just inform management. It engaged the workforce.
A Foundation for Performance-Based Compensation
CONNECT also opened the door to a more sophisticated approach to operator compensation. Entourage is using long-term performance data — not single-week snapshots — to differentiate top performers and align pay with productivity. The goal: to attract and retain the highest-performing operators in the industry by paying them what their performance is worth, with the data to back it up.
Proactive Issue Detection and SLA Protection
With real-time alerts and dashboard visibility, the team can spot production issues before they escalate into schedule problems — exactly what’s needed in a business where every deliverable is tied to a school calendar.
Capacity and Outsourcing Decisions Backed by Data
Knowing in real time what can realistically be produced in-house lets Entourage make smarter, faster outsourcing decisions during peak — protecting both margin and on-time delivery commitments.
Rapid Return on Investment
Entourage saw measurable ROI within their very first yearbook season on the platform — a fast payback on a fast deployment.
The Partnership
What started as a software evaluation has grown into an active working relationship. The Entourage team has consistently pointed to SpencerMetrics’ responsiveness and support quality as standout differentiators. As COO Edward Jo put it: “The SpencerMetrics team has been very responsive, and their support has been outstanding. We look forward to getting more in-depth with the capabilities available to drive our operational excellence initiatives.”
That sentiment was echoed by SpencerMetrics Exec VP Vishal Sahay: “It has been a pleasure to work with the Entourage team and to share in their exciting environment. My team and I look forward to continuing the close working relationships.”
Looking Ahead
Entourage continues to discover new ways to put CONNECT data to work. The early phase focused on fundamentals — book counts, shift comparisons, throughput visibility. The next phase is more strategic: refining performance-based compensation, deepening their use of analytics for operational excellence initiatives, and exploring how the same data foundation that powers reporting today could eventually power workflow automation tomorrow.
“We are delighted with our investment in CONNECT. During our yearbook season, we’ve already seen a good return on our investment.”

It’s the natural arc of a data journey that begins with Capture, moves through Monitor and Analyze, and ultimately reaches Monetize — and Entourage is well on their way.
